Considerations for your greenhouse placement

Large freestanding greenhouse

For any gardener, a greenhouse is essential and can certainly prove to be a stunning focal point in any garden. We all want not only the best growing conditions for our plants but a place we enjoy working in – even entertaining in. This is why accurate greenhouse placement is an extremely important factor to consider when planning.

Our customer case studies certainly reveal that there is much more to an Alitex greenhouse than gardening.

Your greenhouse may be the most prominent feature in your garden and requires careful consideration and planning to get the right greenhouse placement. Our team have travelled all over the UK and overseas and are used to ensuring that your greenhouse is sympathetic to both your garden and home. Indeed we have built a wide range of bespoke greenhouses from large scale structures for walled gardens and estates through to smaller greenhouses for urban gardens. We have replaced older wooden greenhouses (see our before and after images) and Victorian peach houses. You’d be amazed at the variety of glasshouses we see – have a look at our galleries for a snapshot.

Will you need planning permission for an Alitex greenhouse?

We are well versed in understanding the needs of conservation officers and the nuances of the planning process, with considerable success. Strong links with the National Trust, English Heritage and the Royal Horticultural Society certainly help our understanding of sensitive planning issues.

As a general guide, planning permission will be required if any of the conditions listed below apply:

  • The greenhouse placement is located on land at the front of the property.
  • The height of the greenhouse would exceed 4.0m for a dual pitch roof, 3.0m for any other roof. The height of the greenhouse would exceed 2.5m if located within 2.0m of a boundary.
  • The height of the eaves would exceed 2.5m.
  • More than 50% of the area of land around the ‘original house’ would be covered by additions or other buildings.
  • In general if you live in a Conservation Area, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, National Parks or the Broads, planning permission will be required. In these areas the maximum area to be covered by all outbuildings more than 20.0m from the house to be limited to 10msq. Greenhouses in these areas located at the side of the property will require planning permission.
  • Within the curtilage of listed building a greenhouse will require planning permission and, if built against a listed wall, listed building consent.

It should be noted that other consents may be required such as Party Wall agreements which we can advise and provide assistance with.

Whatever your growing needs, location or building listing, we can design and build a bespoke greenhouse to meet your style needs. We understand the importance or aligning functionality and style to not only provide the best all round growing experience but the best greenhouse placement.
