Our clients had first come across Alitex several years ago at the Hampton Court Flower Show and had the idea that if they moved a previously designed and installed wooden-patio and re-lay it somewhere else in the garden, they would have the perfect sunny spot for a greenhouse. A place that could be used as somewhere to garden and relax in.

The area was close enough to the kitchen to feel as though continuity could be established between the house and greenhouse.

This connection was achieved by creating a joining pathway between the two and using the Wood Sage colour of the greenhouse to paint uniform Versailles planters along the pathway. The effect was connective and elegant.

The structure was finished towards the end of spring, planting and hard landscaping followed over the next couple of months. Our clients told us that “the whole process had been a total pleasure,” which we were delighted to hear.

It’s been three years since we first visited our clients in Kent, we’ve gone back, summer 2016, to see how their garden has progressed.

Their greenhouse still provides the perfect place for plants, seedlings and propagating. By thinking of the greenhouse as a dual purpose sitting and growing space, they have placed a table and chairs inside, perfect for reading the paper and it even makes a romantic dining spot in the evenings.

They are pleased to announce that they use their greenhouse throughout most of the year, between February and November, but January and December are a little too cool so they tend to only use it for overwintering plants. Our clients have found that they tend to propagate courgettes and runner beans, and they love growing geraniums. They were surprised how well the orange tree was doing, at Christmas it showed signs of fruit which is still growing seven months later.

Our clients are still loving their greenhouse and now that the plants and trees have grown up around the structure, it’s the ideal escape to enjoy the garden.

“We have worked with Alitex on a number of projects. They have the expertise to design a greenhouse, however small or large that fits in perfectly with the garden we have designed.”
