Enlighten your garden with Owl Lighting

Owl Lighting - pathways

You’ve ordered a brand new Alitex glasshouse and are turning your thoughts to decorating it. Chances are one of the things you are most looking forward to is savouring the new experience in your garden… whatever the weather.

We invest a lot of time and money into our gardens, so why limit enjoyment to the daylight hours? Owl Lighting will extend the time to appreciate your garden, well into the evenings and dark nights.

Why a garden should be radiant

Illuminate your garden and you’ll be able to experience two gardenscapes – day & night. Focal points at night can be different to during the day – what it left unlit will be invisible.

Perhaps your Alitex glasshouse is for entertaining – in that case, visitors to your house may see the garden more at night than during the day – so garden lighting will be very important.

As well as creating a visual nightscape, garden lighting is good for safety, security and brightening pathways

What to watch out for

In the countryside especially, garden lighting should be soft and subtle. Take care to maintain dark skies and think about the effect on wildlife, as well as your neighbours.

Switching

It’s a good idea to have some lighting that turns on automatically as you approach (either on a motion sensor, or timer) – to light the way from car to house and up the garden path. But if you live in the countryside, remember that sensors can also be set off by the wildlife and trees waving in the wind – so make sure you have an extra switch that can turn this function off.

5 Design tips

When planning your lighting scheme, first evaluate the garden and assess which areas you want to emphasise and which ones you’d like to disguise – lighting in different zones; paths, trees, features etc.

  • Pay attention to the light hierarchy – maintain some of the dark
  • Avoid glare – shield the light source wherever possible
  • Create zones so that it’s not all on or off at once
  • Create views from the house
  • Look at layers and combine uplight, downlight and floor lighting for interest.

For the owner of an Alitex glasshouse, garden lighting will eliminate the ‘black mirror’ – melting the boundaries of the building and bringing the outside in.
